First prize winner of the Jean-Pierre Rampal International Flute Competition in 1987, Philippe Bernold, one of the most brilliant representatives of the French school of flute, remains the first French flutist to claim this prestigious title. Born in 1960, he studied with Alain Marion at the Paris National Conservatory, obtaining his first prize in 1982.

 

Henceforth, Philippe Bernold has performed as soloist with important ensembles including Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de Lyon, Orchestre de l’Opera de Lyon, Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, the Halle (Manchester), Prague Chamber Orchestra, Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Varsovia... He has played in famous concert halls such as the Royal Festival Hall in London, Salle Pleyel and Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, Koelner Philharmonie, Seoul Art Center, Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo..., under conductors like, Lorin Maazel, Jean-Pierre Rampal, John Eliott Gardiner, Semyon Bychkov, Kent Nagano, Yehudi Menuhin, Ton Koopman... Philippe Bernold has participated in many festivals like, Aix-en-Provence, Cannes, Radio-France, Strasbourg, Evian, La Roque d’Antheron, Ojai (USA), Lancut (Poland). He has toured all over Europe, the USA, the Middle and the Far East.

 

The discography of Philippe Bernold comprises over 20 CD’s, recorded and issued by companies like, Harmonia Mundi, EMI, Universal, Naïve, Naxos, Lirynx... Many of the recordings have been praised with important distinctions, among them „Grand Prix de l’Academie Charles Cros” and many times „Diapason d’or”.

 

Philippe Bernold successfully combines his busy international career as flutist with an extensive activity as conductor. He studied conducting with René Matter, student of Fritz Münch. In 1994 he founded "Les Virtuoses de l’Opéra de Lyon" with the encouragement of conductor John Elliot Gardner; the ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its high level of artistry. Philippe Bernold was then appointed assistant conductor of Orchestre de Bretagne, where he conducted twenty concerts in the season 1999-2000. Since then, he has been invited to conduct concerts in several countries like, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy, Poland, Korea..., with ensembles like, Sinfonia Varsovia (symphonic concerts, as well as Mozart’s “Cosi Fan Tutte”, in Warsaw, Valence, Nantes, Lisbon, Bilbao...), Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Lyon (at the Festival International de Colmar), Orchestre de Picardie, Orchestre d'Auvergne, Orchestre d’Avignon, Orchestre de Cannes, Symphonic Orchestra of San Remo, Academia de Santa Cecilia, Cappella Istropolitana, Philharmonic Orchestra of Seoul. As conductor he has collaborated with renowned artists like, M. Portal, V. Gens, L. Korcia, R. Capuçon, F. Say, M. Nordmann, S. Nakariakov, C. Tiberghien. Often Philippe Bernold has been invited to perform both, as soloist and conductor, during the same concert.

 

Philippe Bernold is Professor of chamber music at Conservatoire National Supérieur de musique de Paris and Professor of flute at the Lyon Conservatory. Every year he is teaching during the Nice Summer Festival and at the French music Academy in Kyoto (Japan).
